Dinotopia: Behind the ScenesBy James Gurney, Artist
This talk examines the making of Dinotopia from its origins in 1988 to the most recent book, “Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara.” It explores the nitty-gritty of visualizing imaginary scenes realistically in traditional media. The presentation covers research, thumbnail sketches, reference maquettes, perspective, dinosaur reconstruction, step-by-step sequences, and plein-air painting. After the lecture, Mr. Gurney will sign two of his books: “Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara” and “Dinotopia, A Land Apart from Time.”
James Gurney is an artist known for his plein-air landscape paintings, as well as his award-winning illustrations of fantasy and historical subjects. Gurney is also known for his science illustrations, including the World of Dinosaurs postage stamps for the US Postal Service. Gurney brings a perspective of realism and scientific accuracy to his work in fantasy.
